Ford must follow B.C.'s lead and make deal for affordable child care: NDP

Published on July 8, 2021

QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario NDP Child Care critic Bhutila Karpoche said the Ford government must follow the Government of British Columbia's example and make an agreement with Ottawa to create $10-per-day-child care in Ontario.

"Families in Ontario pay astronomical child care fees — so high we hear from people delaying having a baby they desperately want because of the cost of child care," said Karpoche. “The pandemic has caused even more strain.

"For decades, governments in Ontario have refused to make child care affordable. The Ontario Liberals created sky-high child care costs, and Doug Ford refuses to help.

The Ford government must take a page from B.C. and prioritize a deal with the federal government to achieve affordable day care. That agreement must provide support for child care workers, including through the development of a wage grid and capital funding to build the new child care spaces Ontarians desperately need."

Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP have committed to working with the federal government to give Ontarians $10-per-day high-quality, non-profit and public child-care.
