NDP MPPs call for transparency on Etobicoke chemical fire cleanup

Published on August 24, 2023

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP MPPs Sandy Shaw (Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas), NDP critic for Environment, Conservation, and Parks; Peter Tabuns (Toronto—Danforth), NDP critic for Energy and Climate Action, and Bhutila Karpoche (Parkdale—High Park), NDP critic for GTA Issues, have written a letter to Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, David Piccini, demanding increased transparency for the Mimico Creek and Humber River clean-up effort.

On August 11, a fire at an Etobicoke chemical plant caused sludge to rapidly spread into nearby watersheds – including Lake Ontario. Neither the company that owns the plant nor the Ministry have made public which chemicals are in the sludge.

The Ontario NDP are calling on Piccini to answer crucial questions to help the public navigate this, including:

  • Why will this take until October to be completed?
  • What measures have been taken to ensure that locals are fully informed about the risks of contamination at nearby beaches and watersheds?
  • What chemicals are involved?
