UPDATE: On the morning of July 8, Bhutila announced her bill to Save the Ontario Food Terminal which, if passed, would designate the land as a provincially significant employment zone. She also toured the facility, speaking with workers and growers.
Shortly after announcing her press conference, the Minister of Agriculture announced that the Ontario Food Terminal will be “staying put”. Credit goes to the workers, growers and the Save the Ontario Food Terminal campaign who pushed back and forced the Ford government to change direction.
TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:
WHEREAS the Ontario Food Terminal is a vital piece of Etobicoke-Lakeshore's economy, distributing more than 2 billion pounds of produce every year to millions of people across the GTA;
WHEREAS hundreds of small businesses and local farmers rely on the terminal to stay connected to distributors and customers;
WHEREAS over 1,500 employees work at the Ontario Food Terminal;
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to: defend these vital employment lands and ensure that the Ontario Food Terminal stays in Etobicoke-Lakeshore, by designating the terminal as provincially significant employment lands.
