TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:
WHEREAS the Ontario Science Centre has been a beloved institution and heritage site in Ontario for over 50 years, helping children develop curiosity and a love of science for more than half a century, and shutting down a world-class science and cultural institution is a bad decision for the community it serves and all Ontarians;
WHEREAS Premier Ford’s plans to demolish the existing Science Centre building, which is an architecturally-significant historical landmark, and build a new site at Ontario Place that would be half the size;
WHEREAS the current site serves as a treasured community hub and tourist location that serves the communities of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park, and communities have not been consulted;
WHEREAS the government could have invested in revitalizing the Ontario Science Centre, but instead used our public money to concoct a sham business case against this important community hub;
WHEREAS the Conservatives' "business case" shows the one-time cost of relocating the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place would be twice the cost of completing the necessary repairs at the current site;
THEREFORE we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
Immediately invest in repairing the Ontario Science Centre where it is currently located, complete these long-delayed repairs to this irreplaceable heritage building, and hold and respect community consultations about the Ontario Science Centre's future.
